Summary: | Foodways encapsulate the multiple processes leading up to food consumption: where and when food is procured, what cultural influences guide food selection and preparation, in what proportions and combinations food is consumed (Welch and Scarry 1995). Generally, analyses of stable isotope composition of human tissues can reveal the foods a person most commonly consumed. However, the isotopic composition of those foods may vary based on other aspects of foodways, which can skew dietary reconstructions. An interpretive baseline should be used to match human dietary stable isotope ratios to the stable isotope ratios of available foods. This calibrates the interpretation of |
