Summary: | Manning focuses on the archaeology in Ireland's journals. Reference are an essential of any published research. Archaeologists in Ireland have been trained for many years to use the Harvard system, with references in brackets in the text and a bibliography at the end. Historians, on the other hand, were trained to use footnotes, with references given in full on first use and in abbreviated form thereafter. In the Harvard system too many references, especially in a single bracket, can break up the text excessively, but having a bibliography of all published references at the end is a great boon. The footnote system, as prescribed by Irish Historical Studies (IHS), works well for additional information and discussion in the foot/endnotes. |
