Summary:Lucey talks about the life and works of landscape artist JS Alpenny ne Halfpenny. He practiced as drawing master in Ireland and England. He was believed to have been born in the south of Ireland and further that his given names were Joseph Samuel. In fact, he was a Londoner and christened John Samuel Halfpenny. Confusingly, there was a contemporary English artist called Joseph Halfpenny and so Halfpenny used the variant surname "Alpenny" from about the time of the death of the Yorkshire man onwards. The error in name and nationality was copied by others down to the present day, with the result that John Samuel Alpenny's works are catalogued or curated as those of Joseph Samuel Alpenny or "Joseph S Alpenny," while his birth year is also wrongly given as 1787 where included.
