Summary:Ryan outlines the life and work of artist Phoebe Donovan ahead of an exhibition of her works during the Wexford Arts Festival. Donovan was determined to make her career in portraiture, as this was where she thought a living could be made. She excelled in painting humans and animals and also painted landscapes, still lives and botanical subjects. She was an accomplished printmaker, coo, and highly skilled in the art of lithography, producing woodblock prints and fine steel etchings and designing prints, book jackets and posters. Donovan never married, telling her nieces and nephews that she was "married to her art." A self-portrait in the National Self-Portrait Collection of Ireland, University of Limerick portrays a strong-willed, determined woman with a penetrating gaze.
