Summary: | Through a synthesis of feminist and postcolonial theories, Stamm's study examines how the interplay between sexual, cultural and ethnic differences shapes the concepts of femininity and representations of the Orient presented in women's travel writing. Conceived in part as a contribution to ongoing feminist efforts in the retrieval and examination of "forgotten" women writers, this study not only advances more extensive scholarship on Ida von Hahn-Hahn and Ida Pfeiffer, but also brings travelogues by lesser-known female authors such as Thérèse von Bacheracht, Maria Belli, Regula Engel, Anna Forneris, Friederike London, Wolfradine Minutoli, Maria Schuber, and Marie Esperance von Schwartz to light. |
