Summary: | The Post-Cold War era ended with Russian Pres Vladimir Putin's series of strategic miscalculations against Kyiv. But the contest is much larger than a border dispute between Russia and Ukraine. A more overt contest has emerged, pitting Russia's grievances and illusions against the Western democracies and the vestiges of a rules-based order. That contest is most evident in Ukraine, which has passed through a critical turning point after Russia's attempted coup de main against the President Zelensky government in the capital failed spectacularly. Here, Hoffman assesses collective strategies for bringing this conflict to an end. |
