The third section of the book, well over a hundred pages in length, is a selective filmography of Canadian feature production from 1945 to 1984. The initial section, "Early Canadian filmmaking" (pp. 10-72), is a triptych, telling of initial efforts in commercial and documentary filmmaking and providing an anecdotal history of the founding and first years of the National Film Board of Canada. In believing that film culture should be shaped by government fiat, industry group strategy, or the tastes of cultural opinion leaders, Pratley's cry of the heart is the failed dream of reform not only of the post-War Canadian cinema, but also of the British and Australian cinemas of the period. |
