Summary:NIST is issuing the guidelines as a Dec. 31 compliance deadline approaches for a regulation approved last year for defense contractors on safeguarding covered defense information. "Because contractors do business with other organizations, the impact of this requirement will ripple across the private sector," said Ron Ross, one of the NIST guideline authors, in a statement. The guidelines provide organizations a "starting point" and framework for developing procedures to assess controlled unclassified information security requirements, according to NIST, and will help cybersecurity and privacy professionals determine whether they are correctly implementing security safeguards.
