Summary: | Although Japan’s aggression in Asia is well known, less attention has been given to cases of state violence that have taken place on Japanese soil since the modern period began with the Meiji Restoration in 1868. The case of Okinawa is one of the most notorious, even considering that it occurred during wartime. During the Battle of Okinawa, the last ground battle between the United States and Japan, a great number of Okinawan people suffered violence or death at the hands of the Japanese military.
Okinawa was sacrificed by the Japanese military and government in order to defend the mainland. |
