Summary:We evaluated the clinical efficacy and safety of SY5555, a new oral penem. SY5555 was administered to 8 patients with respiratory tract infections: 2 with acute tonsillitis, 1 with chronic tonsillitis, 2 with chronic bronchitis, 2 with bronchiectasis and 1 with pneumonia. Clinical efficacy was good in all cases. The bacteriological response was “eradicated” in 2 patients and “reduced” in 1 case. Neither side effects nor abnormal laboratory findings due to SY5555 were observed.
