Summary: | A 61 year-old man was referred to our hospital for evaluation of a 3-month history of high fever and a right apical nodular shadow that had enlarged progressively on the chest X-ray films. Cytologic examination of sputum and brushing for tumor cells were negative, and no endbronchial lesions were found on bronchoscopy. Since the clinical impression suggested pulmonary abscess which was not responsive to medical treatments, thoracotomy was carried out. Because the frozen section revealed malignant tumor, a right upper lobectomy including mediastinal lymph node dissection was performed. Histological examination showed the mass to be an inflammatory type of malignant fibrous histiocytoma. At present, 13 months after the operation, the patient is alive and well without evidence of recurrence or metastases |
