Summary:Serum luteinizing hormone (LH), estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), total testosterone (T), free testosterone (FT), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) levels in 12 male patients with tuberculosis were measured by RIA prior to and after 8 weeks administration of anti-tuberculous drugs, to investigate their relationship to acneiform eruptions. There were no significant changes in the levels of serum LH, E1, FT, DHT, or DHEA-S, but a significant increase in the level of T, and a significant decrease in the level of E2 were found. Based on these results, we suspected that the hepatic metabolic enzyme activities dependent on cytochromes p-450 were inhibited, and that aromatase activity in the cutaneous tissue was depressed. This suggests that fluctuations in the serum sex steroid hormone levels are one of the possible bases for the occurrence of an acneiform erupion.
