Summary: | This investigation studying 108 females was designed to evaluate thehemodynamics of normal pregnant and post partum subjects, using the left ventricular systolic time intervals (LVSTI) obtained from mechono-cardiograms. It was observed that after the 28th week of gestation, LVSTI values of subjects in a supine position became similar to those of a low cardiac output state, but the LVSTI values returned to the normal range when the subject assumed a left lateral position. Furthermore, the values for the subjects with left lateral position subjects were the same as those of the control group. It is thought that in the supine position the inferior vena cava is obstructed by the gravid uterus with consequent decrease in venous return and cardiac output, while in the lateral position the pressure from the uterus is reduced and thus the LVSTI values are in the normal range. It was concluded that the cardiac function of pregnant and postpartum women should be evaluated in a left lateral position using LVSTI. Cardiac output of some pregnant and postpartum subjects in the lateral and supine positions was also studied by the dye dilution method. |
