Summary:Human serum albumin is a mixture of mercaptalbumin which has a sulfhydryl group, and nonmercaptalbumin which has a sulfide with cysteine and glutathion. The fraction of mercaptalbumin decreased in a variety of diseases including chronic renal failure, liver cirrhosis, and etc.. Human serum albumin preparations produced by three companies and serum albumin of healthy volunteers and liver cirrhosis patients were analyzed by HPLC on anion exchange column. The fractions of mercaptalbumin in the albumin preparations varied with lots and the companies. The fraction of mercaptalbumin in liver cirrhosis was significantly lower than that in healthy subjects. These results suggest the clinical usefulness of analysis of serum mercapt-nonmercaptalbumin.
