Summary:In an attempt to reduce intraoperative blood loss and to avoid blood transfusion, we developed an automatic blood pressure control system based on the state-predictive control method. In the present report the system is further improved by incorporating the fuzzy logic with fail-safe function and individual parameter-identifying function. After its safety and stability were confirmed in dogs, this system was applied in 10 patients undergoing major surgery whose mean arterial pressure was maintained at about 60mmHg. The use of this system resulted in less bleeding as well as more accurate and speedy operations. No adverse effects were detected either clinically or by laboratory tests. We conclude that this system is safe and useful in cases of major surgery causing substantial blood loss although it may need further improvement.
