ANALYSIS OF INFLAMMATORY RESPONSES AND CHANGES OF ENDOTOXIN WITH GELATIN-SEALED KNITTED DACRON GRAFT (Bifurcated Gelsoft®)

Summary:Gelatin-sealed knitted Dacron grafts (Bifurcated Gelsoft®) were electively implanted into the abdominal aorta in 44 patients. Postoperative inflammatory responses and changes of endotoxin (both Toxicolor and Endospecy) were evaluated. Eleven patients had fever above 37.5°C after the 7th-postoperative day (POD). Only one case revealed that the fever came from the prosthesis. Patients were devided into 2 groups, feverish patients (g-F, n=11) and normal temperature patients (g-N, n=33) after 7POD. Postoperative body temperature were significantly higher in g-F, and on 14POD it went back to normal in both groups. The values of WBC in g-F were slightly higher than in g-N, and they became normal after 7POD. The levels of CRP showed no difference, but it was still high on 7 and 14POD. In terms of endotoxin, Toxicolor demonstrated high on 1POD and went down to normal after 7POD, but Endecy kept within normal range. In conclusion, a Toxicolor-reactive substance elevates with implantation of a Gelsoft®, and the substance is not endotoxin. It would not be appropriate that endotoxin is an origin of fever between 7 and 14POD.
