Summary:From April 1985 to March 1994, 32 bioprostheses were implanted in the aortic position and 48 bio-prostheses were implanted in the mitral position. Actuarial freedom from overall valve-related complication at 12 years was 85% in the aortic position and 44% in the mitral position. Actuarial freedom from struatural deterioration at 12 years was 94% in the aortic position and 52% in the mitral position. However, in the patients over the age of sixty, actuarial freedom from struatural deterioration at 12 years was 100% in the aortic position and 82% in the mitral position. We conclude that the Carpentier-Edwards pericardial bio-prosthesis is good choice of the aortic and the mitral positions for the patients over the age of seventy.
