Summary:The studies on cefotiam (CTM, SCE-963), a new derivative of cephalosporin, were made in the field of obstetrics and gynecology and the following results were obtained. The absorption of the drug was rapid and good. The average peak level after intravenous injection of 500 mg in women reached 24.3 μg/ml at twenty minutes and 17.6 μg/ml at thirty minutes after intramuscular injection. The transference of the drug into umbilical cord blood and amniotic fluid was good and rapid. Cefotiam was administered at daily dose of 1-4 g intravenously to eleven patients (two with soft tissue infections, five with intrapelvic infections, two with puerperal fever and two with urinary tract infections).The clinical response was excellent in one case, good in seven cases and fair in three cases, effective ratebeing about 73%. No noteworthy side effect was noted with the drug.
