Summary:Polymer particles with side-chain mesogens were prepared by suspension polymerization and their liquid-crystalline behavior was studied. Liquid-crystalline monomers were suspended in water by irradiation with ultrasound and were polymerized at temperature where the LC monomers show a nematic phase. We obtained the polymer particles with a diameter of micrometer order. Observation with a polarizing microscope revealed that the polymer particles showed all LC phase and the mesogenic side chains were aligned in the particles.
