Summary:We have demonstrated that polymers with 4-chalconyl side groups indicated good photo-LC alignment capability when exposed to linearly polarized near-UV light. In this report, we will discuss the substitution and the copolymerization effect on the photoalignment behavior. Polymers employed are poly(4-methacryloyloxy chalcone) (PM4Ch), its derivatives with methoxy- and cyano-substitution (PM4Ch-OMe and PM4Ch-CN, respectively), and its copolymers with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The photoalignment behavior was examined in relation with the photoreactions involved, that is, photoisomerization and photodimerization. We concluded that the selective photodimerization is indispensable for the thermal stability.
