Summary:(1) The mucilage was isolated from the root of “Tororo-aoi” (Abelmoschus manihot, MEDIC) and its chemical components were detected. (2) The hydrolysed solution of mucilage was examined at first by paper chromatography and next by tests for carbohydrates under usual way. (3) It was concluded that this mucilage consisted of a large amount of rhamnose and gal-acturonic acid, and then of a small quantity of galactose and of xylose, and no other carbohyd-rates. (4) The ash content of mucilage was about 26%, which mainly consisted of CaO (Fe203 and MgO were neglegible), and this calcium was seemed to be combined with mucilage.
