Summary:Pipemidic acid (PPA), a derivative of piromidic acid (Panacid®), was studied basically and clinically, and the following results were obtained. The antibacterial activity of PPA was lower against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella than E. coli and Proteus. The MIC values of the latter two organisms were usually below 6.25 μg/ml. Concentrations in serum after single oral administration of 500 mg PPA attained a peak ranging 2.5 to 4.1 μg/ml in 2 to 4 hours. PPA was clinically used in 18 cases of respiratory infections and the efficacy rate was 47.1 %.As for side effects, five cases complained of gastro-intestinal disturbance, though the symptoms ceased after stopping administration.
