It was, however,forspecific groups of women with whom the journal directly engaged. These demographics, which are represented in the photographs in figures 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3, included forward-looking genteel ladies, the first generation of professional Chinese women, and students in new-style schools (such as those depicted on the journal’s first cover, figure 0.1). The journal wasbyan even smaller subset of women in these demographics, the writing women discussed in the second part of this chapter.
