The Wihkohtowin: Ritual Feasting among Cree and Métis Peoples in Northern Alberta

I provide new data and interpretations on the wihkohtowin, a key ritual feast of Cree and Métis peoples in northern Alberta. I draw on my own interviews and ethnographic research, archived interviews, other archival data and published accounts of the wihkohtowin. As a historically important shamanic ritual practised in the contemporary context, the wihkohtowin is relevant to relations with animals and non-human nature, including spirits and the dead, as well as relations within human society. Taking an approach adapted from Don Handelman and my informants, I suggest that the wihkohtowin merits deeper analysis in its own right: historically, linguistically, phenomenologically and emotionally. Cet article apporte des données et des interprétations nouvelles sur le wihkohtowin, une fête rituelle centrale chez les Cris et les Métis du nord de l'Alberta. Il s'appuie sur les entrevues et la recherche ethnographique de l'auteur, sur des entrevues d'archive, sur d'autres données d'archives et sur des récits publiés à propos du wihkohtowin. Rituel chamanique d'importance historique encore pratiqué dans le contexte actuel, le wihkohtowin renvoie aux relations avec les animaux et avec la nature non humaine—y compris les esprits et les morts—ainsi qu'aux relations au sein de la société humaine. Adoptant une approche inspirée du travail de Don Handelman et des informateurs de l'auteur, l'article suggère que le wihkohtowin mérite en soi une analyse plus approfondie, à la fois sur les plans historique, linguistique, phénoménologique et émotionnel.
