Summary:We investigated the impression of an overall lightness of a space surrounded by wallpaper where the total area of the figure and ground were equal. In Experiment 1 and 2 the 10 participants compared the overall perceptual lightness between two rooms. In Experiment 3 the participants compared the perceptual expanse of the figure and ground in each room. The results revealed the following: (1) The influence of the ground on perceptual lightness was stronger than that of the figure. (2) The expanse of the total area of the ground was perceived to be larger than that of the figure in pattern A. It was consistent with the known phenomenon that the ground spreads behind the figure. While the figure was perceived to be larger in pattern B and the ground had less dominance in the appearance of the overall pattern lightness.
