Summary: | Throughout this book, I have documented the constantly shifting conceptual borders that structure English studies today. I now want to consider the recurring calls to create a more unified discipline that were outlined in the introduction. Since Wayne Booth first beseeched the warring factions of English to reconcile back in his 1982 MLA presidential address, a range of critics have sought to establish common ground that would overcome long-standing divisions (Robert Scholes and Peter Elbow were just two of the more prominent examples offered in the introduction). It is worth noting the similarity between Booth’s initial suggestions and subsequent proposals. |
