Summary:A boundary element method is developed for the transient response analysis of a rectangular plate with a slit. Laplace transform is applied to the governing equation and the formulation employs the fundamental solution of the static problem of the plate. This creates not only boundary integrals, but also surface integrals owing to the presence of the inertia and external forces. Thus the discretization consists of boundary elements as well as interior elements. The response of the plate is obtained by the inverse transformation of displacements. The method is applied to square plates having a slit, and the transient response is calculated numerically.
