Summary:"Carmina Latina Epigraphica," by Manfred Schmidt, gives a breakdown of Buecheler's collection of inscribed poems by meter. [...]the volume includes eight appendices on epigraphic conventions, epigraphic abbreviations, onomastics, Roman kinship terms, Roman voting tribes, Roman numbers, and a list of digital resources. The examples in "Social Life in Town and Country" (by Garrett Fagan) are particularly evocative, from "clackers" (musicians who wore noise-makers on their shoes) who honored the Empress Faustina, to benefactors who sponsored the food (pastries, honeyed wine, nuts, and more wine "administered in a dignified fashion," 500) at annual birthday parties, to happy customers of prostitutes (their very specific comments on what pleased them not quoted in this family-friendly review), to dice-players ("the grudging dots compel the expert to play with luck!," 505).
