Summary:Psychological assessments were carried out to evaluate the transition in the 22-channel cochlear implant patients before and 3 to 6 months after implanation. The subjects were 25 postlingual, profoundly deaf adults who received 22-channel cochlear implant system. The Yatabe-Guilford Personality Inventory test was administered to 25 implantees.Among the 12 characteristic traits of the Y-G test, the score of depression indicated significantly higher after implantation and the other 11 characteristic traits remained unchanged. After implantation, half of the patients had a tendency to get worse in their personal profiles because their emotions were unstable. In the Japanese edition of Cornell Medical Index-Health Questionnaire, 16 subjects completed the test. The mean score for the subjects on each characteristic trait including the depression scale indicated a tendency to decrease after implantation. The Landscape Montage Technique was performed on 11 subjects, and pictures painted before and after, implantation were compared within the two.The picture painted after implantation showed a great change compared to the one of before implantation. Subjects were inclined to paint more vividly using softer colors, vacant area was filled in, and the whole pictures had a better perspective after rehabilitation.Their changes observed through pictures in the Landscape Montage Technique are considered as an expression of their delights as well as problems in using the implant.
