Summary: | Histopathological studies were carried out on a patient with multiple, recurrent adult laryngeal papilloma. The presence of HPV proteins in the upper layer of the epidermis was confirmed immunohistologically by the PAP method. In addition, using an HPV DNA typing kit (Tradename: Viratype) based on the dot method and developed by Toray Industries, Inc., HPV (6, 11) was detected, and HPV 6b was identified by the Southern blot method. The same studies were performed on 4 other patients with laryngeal papilloma, 3 patients with laryngeal dysplasia, a patient with carcinoma in situ, and 3 patients with larynogeal carcinoma, but the presence of HPV could not be demonstrated. Investigation of the similarities between laryngeal papilloma, laryngeal carcinoma and lesion of the uterine cervix revealed the following points. (1) There is a correlation between condyloma acuminatum and laryngeal papilloma in terms of the epidemiological distribution. (2) There is similarity in terms of the HPV viral type. That is, the same viral types were detected from condyloma acuminatum and laryngeal papilloma, and from laryngeal carcinoma and lesions of the uterine cervix. (3) These lesions all occur in the transitional resion of the mucous epithelium. In view of these points, it is surmised that these diseases are very closely related. It will be necessary to carry out further epidemiological and molecular biology studies on these disease in the future. |
