THE CLINICAL AND PATHOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS OF EXPLANTED PORCINE CARDIAC XENOGRAFTS

Cardiac xenografts have been implanted on 119 acquired valvular patients from 1974 and 9 degenerative valves (thrombosis 1, perforation 3, laceration 3, calcification 2) were explanted at reoperations. As the type of xenograft dysfunction, perforation and/or laceration was more common than calcifica...

Summary:Cardiac xenografts have been implanted on 119 acquired valvular patients from 1974 and 9 degenerative valves (thrombosis 1, perforation 3, laceration 3, calcification 2) were explanted at reoperations. As the type of xenograft dysfunction, perforation and/or laceration was more common than calcification in Japan and thier clinical progression was very rapid and prognosis was poor. Breakdown of collagen fibrils due to materials fatigue was the most important electromicroscopic findings in the perforated and/or lacerated xenograft.
