Summary:Heterogeneous composite esters consisting of two different kinds of acids were prepared from trimellitic acid, adipic acid, diols, and monofunctional alcohols. Acid fractions and reactant molar ratios of diols and monofunctional alcohols were varied. After azeotropic dehydration esterification and ester-interchange reaction from the mixture of esters and the diols and also by the method via ester-alcohols which were produced from trimellitic anhydride and diols and mono-functional alcohols, heterogeneous composite esters of different acids were obtained, Products were mixtures of esters of high boiling temperatures over 240°C/0.5mmHg and they were evaluated as non-volatile plasticizer for poly (vinyl chloride). Platicizing efficiency, solution viscosity and softening temperature were compared with those of trimellitic ester, composite esters, and their mixtures. Heterogeneous composite esters showed relatively good properties and acted as admix agent by adding in a small amount to two-component mixtures.
