IMMUNOLOGICAL STUDIES ON CEFUROXIME

The immunological property of cefuroxime and its cross-reactivity with other cephalosporins and benzylpenicillin were studied, and the following results were obtained. 1. Cefuroxime showed an antigenic activity as evidenced by the elicitation of specific hemagglutinative antibodies and PCA antibodie...

Summary:The immunological property of cefuroxime and its cross-reactivity with other cephalosporins and benzylpenicillin were studied, and the following results were obtained. 1. Cefuroxime showed an antigenic activity as evidenced by the elicitation of specific hemagglutinative antibodies and PCA antibodies in rabbits immunized with protein conjugates of this antibiotic incorporated in Freund's complete adjuvant. 2. Cefuroxime-OA conjugates in alum produced in mice a specific IgE type antibody against this antibiotic. 3. Cefuroxime showed no cross reactivities, with other cephalosporins and benzylpenicillin in hemagglutinative reaction and PCA reaction. 4. Cefuroxime had weaker activity thancephaloridine, cephalothin and benzylpenicillin in direct Coombs test in vitro.
