Summary:Effects of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) administered orally on biliary ICG excretion were studied in seven patients with percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) for obstructive jaundice. Biliary ICG excretion was significantly increased by UDCA, and there was close correlation between biliary excretion of bile acids and ICG. Effects of various bile acid addition on biliary ICG excretion were also studied using a single-pass isolated perfused rat liver system. Biliary ICG excretion was enhanced by bile acids in a dosedependent manner without affecting ICG uptake by the liver, and its enhancing effect was strong in more hydrophobic bile acids. Papaverine experiments suggested that vesicle transport might be involved in intracellular transport of ICG.
