Summary:The relationship between gallstones in 681 patients and gallbladder carcinoma in 216patients was studied retrospectively. Gallstones coexisted in 117 (54.2%) of the 216 patients with gallbladder carcinoma. Gallbladder carcinoma was found by ultrasonography in 10 (1.5%) of the 681 patients with gallstones, whereas in 4,817 control patients having no stones, it was found in 6 (0.1%). In the case control study (216 patients with gallbladder carcinoma versus 648 control subjects with no cacer), the relative risk (odds ratio) of gallbladder carcinoma for those with gallstones was 26.0 (p<0.001), in contrast to those with no gallstones. Thus, a close relationship was demonstrated between g allstone disease and gallbladder carcinoma mainly diagnosed by ultrasonography, a new image-examination. In order to detect gallbladder carcinoma in its early stage, a regular check up on patients with gallstones is important.
