Summary:The effects of intakes of Plantago ovata (PO), PO supplemented with the bifidobacteria preparation (BP) and PO supplemented with BP and fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) on the fecal microflora and fecal properties were studied in eight healthy human volunteers. By the intake of PO only, significant reductions of the total counts and all anaerobes were found and the average weight of voided stools per day was significantly increased from 113 g/day before the feeding to 210 g/day. The intakes of PO supplemented with BP and FOS resulted in markedly decreasing numbers of the total bacteria and all anaerobes, and significantly increasing average weight of all stools/day from all subjects. The result clearly indicates that the higher diluted reactions of intestinal contents are effected by the intake of PO supplemented with BP and FOS rather than by that of PO only.
