Summary:From the time the first Euro-Americans set eyes on the mounds and embankments of Madison County, Tennessee, in the early 1820s, those prehistoric earthworks became a source of interest and speculation. Throughout the nineteenth century and into the early decades of the twentieth century, references to the earthworks near Pinson found their way into numerous archaeological and historical accounts, which included eyewitness reports, scholarly catalogs, and armchair musings.
