Preparation of Spherical PVA Hydrogels Bearing β-Cyclodextrin and Their Application for Immobilizing Microbes

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) spherical hydrogels can be used for the immobilization microbes for wastewater treatment and in bioreactors. Summary:Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) spherical hydrogels can be used for the immobilization microbes for wastewater treatment and in bioreactors. In this study, we prepared PVA-bonded-β-cyclodextrin hydrogel beads which contained 10 to 110 µmol/g of β-cyclodextrin (βCyD) by reacting βCyD with PVA using formaldehyde (80 g/L) at 80°C for 3 hours. Phenol-degrading bacteria were immobilized in the spherical hydrogel containing βCyD at 0, 10, 33, 41, and 74 µmol/g in a bubbling vessel. Batchwise phenol degradation tests were carried out with each immobilized biocatalysts in model wastewater containing initially 500 mg/L of phenol. The immobilized biocatalyst having the βCyD component in the hydrogels degraded phenol very effectively.
