Summary:Checking the seismic safety of dam-gate systems in addition to the dam body is an essential requirement. In this paper, the present design codes for the structures of dam-gate systems and some types of their damage during earthquakes are summarized. As a case study, dynamic response of concrete piers of a dam-gate system is analyzed using finite element method. The result shows that excessive relative displacement between piers of the dam-gate system causes various types of damage to the system. Finally, based on these findings, a procedure to check the seismic safety of dam-gate systems is presented.
