Summary: | Aluminum hydroxide was precipitated in the presence of ammonium sulfate with increasing pH of the solution by the hydrolysis of urea at 90°C. The amounts of precipitated aluminum and the coprecipitated sulfate were determined at various periods of the precipitation. Sulfate was coprecipitated from the initial period and its amount was increased with increasing amount of the precipitating aluminum hydroxide, but it reached a constant value in the final period. Sulfate acts as the coagulating agent for the precipitation of aluminum hydroxide. The precipitates of aluminum hydroxide consisted of unit particles at the initial period of the precipitation, but they changed gradually to the granular and coagulated state by the adsorption of sulfate. |
