Summary:In anticipation of the coming Tokyo meeting of the 5th International Congress on Medical Librarianship (ICML) in 1985, the past four congresses of the ICML are summarized. This report was presented to the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Japan Medical Library Association (JMLA), which is to be the host of the 5th ICML, by the Executive Director of the JMLA. Analyzing the current status of medical information activities, the reporter points out the change of the term medical information to health information, the development of topics on consumer health information and primary health care, and the increase of the social responsibility of medical institute libraries. Behind this new wave, the reporter stated that there are the world-wide activities of the U. S. National Library of Medicine and the World Health Organization, as well as the health sciences information needs of the developing countries, which account for 90 percent or more of the world population.
