Summary:By utilising a Rapid-lanometer, the authors have devised a method to test the bulkiness of raw silk and discusses the factors affecting the bulkiness in the process of silk reeling. Major results obtained are : (1) The bulkiness of raw silk is represented by the apparent density tested under a fixed load as in the following equation : ρ = 8 d /9 000 πh2 where ρ is the density, d is the size and h is the thickness of a raw silk yarn bundle measured with Rapid-lanometer. (2) When the size of a raw silk yarn bundle d0 is obtained at a constant thickness (h =2.0 mm) from the relation between h and d, the properties of bulkiness can be obtained from the following equation : ρ=7.70×10-5 d0 (3) It has been found by this method that the appearance of the bulkiness of the several kinds of raw silk correlates well with their apparent density. (4) The analysis by this method has shown clearly the factors affecting the bulkiness of raw silk.
