Summary: | While German troops occupied most of France, Hitler devised the fiction of a free French state in the southern part of the country and administered under Marshal Pétain from the spa city of Vichy. The establishment of Vichy caused a rift between English and French Canada. English Canada regarded Vichy France as Hitlerʹs puppet state, pure and simple. French Canada, largely because of Marshal Pétainʹs enormous prestige, accepted Vichy as the legitimate government of France and an improvement over the anticlerical Third Republic.
