Summary:New methods and theories of lithic analysis have greatly increased the ability of archaeologists to make reliable inferences concerning prehistoric behavior. In spite of these developments, a review of the current state of lithic analysis in the Southeast reveals that lithic data are seldom used to their full potential. We discuss some fundamental problems with lithic analysis as it is generally conducted in the Southeast, including widespread failures to integrate tool and flake data and to interpret lithic data in relation to other artifact classes. Several exemplary lithic studies from the Southeast illustrate the utility of examining lithic assemblages from a holistic perspective.
