Summary:It was recently found that the polycarbonate copolymerized with a small amount of polysiloxane shows good non-flammability. In this study, it was investigated on the thermal decomposition of polysiloxane co-polycarbonate in detail in order to clarify the behavior of polysiloxane segment in burning. As a consequence, it has turned out that polysiloxane-co-polycarbonate heated at around 400°C forms an airtight char, which contains the thermal decomposition products of polysiloxane on the surface, indicating that the char hindered the heat and gas transfers that are necessary for burning.
