Summary:This essay explores a case study of participatory action research (PAR) into the experiences and views of students as they enter and leave high school. Ethical issues are inevitably entwined in such an enterprise at both practical and epistemological levels. Formal institutions have ethical standards to be satisfied, which may or may not be compatible with the intrinsically ethical ideals of participatory research.
