Summary:A new method of tool wear testing on gear hobbing was developed. First, the cutting mechanism for gear hobbing was examined visually by 2D and 3D CAD. The cutting mechanism of the proposed method was the same as gear hobbing with hob shift. The relations between the chip volume and cutting forces were clarified. The chip shape in the proposed method was similar to gear hobbing. This experimental method was useful to investigate hob wear.
