Summary:RapidIO is becoming prominent in the embedded systems industry as an interconnection technology capable of connecting heterogeneous devices like Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) into one integrated design. This paper presents an advanced RapidIO system architecture that is versatile and at the same time compatible with its predecessor, Ethernet. The design flexibility is mainly contributed by a SRIO switch connected in star topology. The FPGA and DSPs associated with the switch are entirely responsible for its configuration without the need for any external flash devices. An Ethernet interface is also integrated into the model to dynamically alter the system parameters with a User Interface (UI) which can be run on any Windows/Linux server, thus providing a gateway between SRIO and Ethernet. Such a system can find application in Satellite base stations. Finally, this design is implemented to model a Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) based receiver system for C-DOT indigenous satellite project.
