Summary:In IP networks, a voice quality suffers from the uncertainness of the packet-switch network characteristics. In particular, delay variation, the so-called jitter, can cause the packet-loss effect, resulting in sound degradation. An adaptive playout-buffer scheduling algorithm is used to overcome the packet-loss effect caused by the jitter. A distribution-based approach provides an analytical scheduling scheme that meets a desired quality of service. This approach highly depends on the method to calculate channel characteristics. In this paper, three different calculation methods are suggested. One of three gives a distribution-based approach the ability to capture local channel characteristics. As a result, a distribution-based approach becomes more efficient.
