Summary:This paper presents a novel controller for the speed governing system of the hydro electric power plant under the effect of water hammer. The proposed controller is based on cascading of low pass filter with PID controller. The controller is very efficient in controlling the overshoot, stability and the dynamics of the speed-governing of hydro electric system supplying an isolated/grid connected load. The results of the proposed controller have been compared with conventional proportional integral and proportional integral derivative controllers by considering the open loop frequency response. A remarkable improvement in stability of the system has been observed with proposed controller justifying its applicability. Simulated results given in the paper show the feasibility and versatility of the proposed controller. Results are also graphically verified with the help of Bode and time domain plots.
